Pat Suppes, "Representations of Language in the Brain and in the Mind"
Abstract: This lecture will begin with a brief review of the literature on
what can be said about the representational status of mental imagery.
Second, the apparent lack of any general theory of any detail on mental
representations of words and sentences will be examined. Third, the
possibility that detailed results of brainwave representations may
eventually fill this gap will be considered. Fourth, the question will be
raised of whether of not such brainwave representations will become the
mental representations of language in the future. For example, how will we
come to think of semantic computations of truth in ordinary circumstances?
A Humean answer will be outlined.
