Logic & Philosophy of Science

Course Description

Course:  PHIL 246, SS 236
Name:  Theory of Descriptions
Description:  This seminar is a detailed study of the four major traditions in the logical treatment of definite descriptions, and the various motivations thereof; the Frege Tradition, the Russell Tradition, the Hilbert-Bernays Tradition, and the Free Logic Tradition. One of the major questions the seminar addresses is this: is there a common problem to which the four traditions can be seen as solutions? Karel Lambert thinks so, and the seminar will examine that view also.
