This course will look at (1) the social sciences as sciences and (2) the
sociology of science. The first part is concerned with the nature of
scientific inquiry understood as the search for scientific knowledge and
the demarcation criterion for what counts as science. The second part
will be concerned with the way that science is in fact practiced, the way
that this practice influences other institutions, and the role played by
individuals and institutions in the practice of science. Breadth category III.
