Logic & Philosophy of Science

Course Description

Course:  LPS/Phil 115/215
Name:  History of Analytic Philosophy
Description:  The course will be an introduction to the analytic tradition of Frege, Russell and the early Wittgenstein. The orientation to the tradition is from the perspective of its doctrines concerning arithmetic and logic. This will form the context in which the methodology of analysis will be studied. The basic text of the course is Frege’s Foundations of arithmetic. Although Frege’s is the main text, later authors will be included to illuminate the problems Frege sought to address, the views he advanced, and the difficulties his views faced. A syllabus outlining the topics of the lectures will be distributed at the first class.
