| Course: | LPS/Phil 29 |
| Name: | Critical Reasoning |
| Description: |
This course is the first part of a logic sequence (29,
30, 31) that satisfies the mathematics/symbolic systems breadth
requirement. In this course students will evaluate arguments by
learning the basics ofboth propositional and categorical logic.
Along the way, students will develop skills (such as the truth-table
method, Venn Diagrams, and translations) that prove useful for
evaluating arguments. We will discuss some limitations of
propositional and categorical logic and touch on how the predicate
calculus is superior in these respects. Students will also learn
about common fallacies by identifying fallacious arguments in
everyday life.
Prerequisites: none
Grading: weekly homeworks, midterm and final exam
