"Rankings Rock"

Abstract:

Ranking theory is a normative theory of epistemic states and their dynamics.  I will first present ranking theory in analogy to probability theory.  Then I will present the consistency argument for the thesis that degrees of disbelief should obey the ranking calculus.  Finally, and depending on the time that is left, I will present some (very preliminary) work in progress (on logical omniscience and conceptual changes, iterated belief revision, conditionals, and knowledge).  These applications of ranking theory will occupy me for the time of my visit at UCI (and beyond).  They will (hopefully!) convince you that rankings rock.
